Wolves hire Mike Penberthy as shooting coach, fill out scouting staff

Penberthy The Minnesota Timberwolves have added to their development and scouting departments with the announcement of three hires on Thursday. The Wolves announced the hiring of former Lakers’ shooter Mike Penberthy as the team’s shooting coach, along with Jason Harvey as a scout and the promotion of Derek Pierce to advance scout. From the team:

The Minnesota Timberwolves today announced the hiring of Mike Penberthy as the team’s shooting coach and Jason Hervey as scout. In addition, Derek Pierce is being promoted from general scout to advance scout.

Penberthy is a great candidate to be the team’s shooting coach because he could flat-out fill it up from outside. He only played in two NBA seasons from 2000 to 2002, but in his rookie year he made 39.6% of his 3-point attempts (139 attempts in 53 games). In just three games his second season, he didn’t attempt a single 3-pointer. This was after being one of the best scorers in NAIA (National Associating of Intercollegiate Athletics) when he was at The Master’s College in Santa Clara, California. During his four-year college career, Penberthy shot 43.8% from downtown and never dipped below 42.7% for the season. After his time with the Lakers, he went on to play in the Italian League from 2002 to 2008. He shot over 40% from 3-point range in the Italian League in almost every season.

Also, you can follow him on Twitter (@mikepenberthy) where his Twitter name is currently Swish Beats, which is fantastic.

Jason Harvey has worked with Flip Saunders in a few places over the last decade. He was an assistant video coordinator with the Detroit Pistons from 2005 to 2009 (Flip coached there from 2005 to 2008). He was an advanced scout and video coordinator for the Washington Wizards from 2009 to 2012 (Flip was coach there from 2009 to 2012) before becoming the director of basketball operations with the Pistons the last two years.

Derek Pierce has been with the Wolves for the past five seasons as a personnel scout for the NBA and college players. As an advanced scout, he’ll help out a lot with game preparation for the coaching staff this season. He’s also spent time with the Golden State Warriors, Washington Wizards, and Indiana Pacers over the years as an advanced scout and video coordinator.

I, for one, can find absolutely no reason to complain about hiring someone named Swish Beats for the coaching staff. Great move, Flip!

  2. Snyder says:

Also, while I see all the obvious jokes being made about Rubio and Brewer on Twitter, one of my hopes would be that Penberthy can help Chase re-establish himself as a perimeter threat, along with helping LaVine and Wiggins to develop consistent shooting habits.

I wonder if he would be able to play a role in helping players make better decisions as far as shot selection, along with helping them improve shot mechanics?

As much as we should hope for improvement from the average/below-average shooters, we should also hope this pushes the good shooters to a new level. That would get that team average up just as quickly. The Wolves haven’t had a guy shoot over 40% from 3 since Rambis was here, which is the only situation where it’s allowable to pine for the days when Rambis was coach.

Can a shooting coach help Rubio to develop a floater?
