For the first time in franchise history, the Timberwolves will be picking first overall. Assuming Anthony Bennett and Andrew Wiggins remain on the roster next season, the Wolves will employ the last three number 1 overall picks all on the same roster.
Technically, the Wolves have never moved up in the draft, but that was impossible this year, as injuries and inexperience led them to the NBA’s worst record, giving them a 25 percent chance at landing the top spot.
Now that the lottery has completed, here is a look at the top 14 as it stands right now.
1. Minnesota Timberwolves
2. Los Angeles Lakers
3. Philadelphia 76ers
4. New York Knicks
5. Orlando Magic
6. Sacramento Kings
7. Denver Nuggets
8. Detroit Pistons
9. Charlotte Hornets
10. Miami Heat
11. Indiana Pacers
12. Utah Jazz
13. Phoenix Suns
14. Oklahoma City Thunder
As for who the Wolves will take with the top pick, I laid my thoughts out on Twitter shortly after the announcement was made.
KG will be mentoring one of Karl Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor. This excites me.

The Wolves will almost certainly walk away on draft night with either Karl Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor, the two longstanding choices for the number one overall spot. Ever since the NCAA tournament hit, favor has fallen more towards Towns, the big man out of Kentucky, who has shown potential to become a dominant two-way inside presence. Duke’s Okafor, on the other hand, has a chance to be a once-in-a-generation post player.
There are upsides and downsides to each, and we as a group will go into it in further detail as the draft comes nearer, but I think the general AWAW writer consensus (definitely between myself and Zach) early on is in favor of taking Towns with the first pick. Either player will have a fun advantage in the tutelage of Kevin Garnett at his disposal, but there’s certainly a fair amount of debate in who should receive it.
But tonight shouldn’t be the night to get into heavy debate. For the first time in Wolves history, fans will get to experience the NBA draft with the knowledge they can take whoever they want. Tonight is a night to sit back, take a breath, and enjoy the evening. Tonight was fun.
